In the middle of the 17th century, in Russia they began to punish severely opponents of patriarch Nikon’s Church reform. They were called schismatics. Some could not endure the oppression and succumbed to the reform. But a great number of Old Believers, who valued their faith more than anything else, left their homes and their way of life. They went farther and farther away from the center of Russia, where their rights were denied, even the right to life. Old Believers have survived epidemics, wars, bad years together with the Latvians, Poles, Jews.
